In the experiments they used a bio-feedback mechanism based on sensors and somebody shouting at you - sounds pretty effective to me. The point was that over time the individuals stopped needing the stimulus and could do it themselves. So the summary is that you need to train yourself to spot boredom setting in and bring yourself back. In time it should get easier but I can imagine this being a fairly hard slog to get there.
